Jamaica set to win five gold medals at Caribbean Boxing Champs

Jamaica’s team of three men and two women to the AMBC/Caribbean Boxing Championships now taking place in Rouseau, Dominica, is on course to win five gold medals when the championships end today.

So far, Sherikee Moore, who fought in the Novice female category, won a gold medal when she defeated Tiffany Delice when the referee stopped the contest at one minute 10 seconds of round one. Also pocketing goal was novice heavyweight Jasmine Graham who defeated Faith Field, also from Barbados, at 2:14 of round one and cruiserweight Jaden Eccleston who defeated Keith Demanyoh from Martinique on points 3-2 to win the gold in that division.

Today, the closing night of competition, lightweight Daniel Hylton, who assured himself of at least a silver medal when he defeated Ajani Jones from Barbados, fights Joshua Touissant from Dominica in the final as does light-heavyweight Jerone Ennis who reached the final with an excellent victory over Charles Cox from Barbados by unanimous decision. He fights Amore Payne from Antigua and Anguilla for gold today.

Team manager Leroy Brown told The Gleaner that he was very proud of the boxers, and said that coach Gilbert Vaz had done a marvellous task in moulding them as a fighting unit. He was also full of praise for the Jamaica Olympic Association for their financial assistance in making it possible for the team to participate in the championships. Brown, who is a former International Technical Official and a member of AIBA’s Referee and Judges Commission, was recruited by the Caribbean Boxing Association to be the technical director when the individual who had the assignment cancelled at the last moment.
