Throws double for Lawrence at JC meet
Calabar High School’s thrower Kobe Lawrence continued from where he left off last season after two excellent performances at the 29th staging of the Pure Water/JC/R. Danny Williams meet at the Ashenheim Stadium, Jamaica College (JC) at the weekend.
Lawrence who had two second-place finishes in Class One shot put and discus last year at the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys and Girls Athletics Championships, before going on to win gold in the shot put at the Carifta Games and silver at the World Under 20 Championships in Cali, Colombia, was in a no-sense mood. On Friday he was in record-breaking form in the Class One discus with a winning mark of 61.55 metres. He returned on Saturday for another big performance after taking the shot put with a heave of 19.41m. On both occasions JC’s Racqui Broderick was second in both event with a best of 16.32m in the shot put and 54.75m in the discus.
On the track St Elizabeth Technical’s hurdler Shamer Blake had two good wins on Saturday. After his win in the Class One 110m hurdles in 13.99 seconds, he returned later to score an impressive victory in the 400m hurdles in 52.95 seconds. Kingston College’s (KC) Diego Stewart was second overall in 54.09 seconds with Princewell Martin of JC, third in 54.15.
In the Class One 100m Jaiden Reid of JC produced the fastest time on the day over the event after winning his heat in 10.55 seconds as Jahlani Gordon of Wolmer’s Boys’ (10.63) was second overall and Camperdown High’s Nickoy Drummond (10.65), third.
St Elizabeth’s Tremaine Todd and Calabar’s Byron Walker were the respective 100m winners in Classes Two and Three. Todd was timed in 10.71 with Dante Watson of JC second in 10.90, and Zachary Wallace of Maggoty High, third in 10 95. Watson’s winning time in Class Three was 11.43.
Akeem Honeyghan and Yoshane Bowen scored good wins for Maggoty in the 800m. Honeyghan won the Class Three event in two minutes 01.76 seconds with his teammate, taking Class Two in 1:58.14.
Calabar, JC and KC had one, two finishes in the 1500m. In Class Three, Calabar’s Carlos Brison won in 4:32.97, ahead of Jevarne Green in 4:39 75. Brian Kiprop (KC) topped Class Two in 4:16.99 ahead of Nahashon Ruto 4:17.22. In Class One, Nicholas Parker came out on top for JC in 4:01.23 with Omarion Davis taking second in 4:12 12.
