Bramwell, Campbell top 2023 Spectrum Handgun Champs
JAMAICA’S master class shooter Ryan Bramwell defeated a highly competitive field on Sunday at the 2023 Spectrum Handgun Championships. He was crowned the top male shooter over a field that included shooters from Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados, The Cayman Islands, as well as top local shooters.
Bramwell, who scored a total of 1,029 points, finished ahead of Andrew Yap, who scored 1,008 points and Alrice Palmer, who finished third with 922.
“I shot very well. I was fast and aggressive, and I had very good hits,”Bramwell said. “I’ve been analysing my shooting, and I’ve kept on improving and getting better. So what I did over the past months was to work on the physical aspect, and I’ve gotten much faster,”he added.
Yeonie Campbell took top spot among the women as she amassed a total of 982 points. She was well ahead of Florence Golding, in second with 407, and Philana Brown, who took third with 305.
Campbell stated that she was pleased with her performance on the day while adding that the overall performance of the ladies was commendable.
“My performance was okay. I think that the stages were challenging as well as they allowed you to express yourself, so I was pleased with my performance. The ladies did exceptionally well. I’m proud of them, and I think that we all performed admirably, and the results showed,” Campbell stated.
President of the Jamaica Rifle Association Major John Nelson hailed the highly competitive 2023 Spectrum Handgun Championships and believes that having overseas competitors participating was a boost.
“It was a level three competition, which, in fact, is the highest we’ve had for about four years. We had shooters from Cayman Islands, Barbados, and Trinidad and Tobago as the championships was attractive enough for them to be here. What happens in these types of competitions is that it brings out all of our shooters and generates a serious amount of comradeship,” Major Nelson said.
The top overseas shooter was Barbados’ Richard Durrant, who amassed a total of 668 points for 32nd overall. The Barbadian also hailed the high level of shooting currently in Jamaica.
“The quality of shooting here is very high, but I still had some hope of placing on the podium. This level of competition really pushes you and makes you better, so I’ll come again,” he said.
