Terrelonge completes sprint double at NACAC
EDWIN ALLEN HIGH School sprinter Theianna-Lee Terrelonge won the women’s under-18 200 metres to close out a sprint double on yesterday’s final day of competition at the North America, Central America and Caribbean Athletics Association (NACAC) Under-18 and Under-23 Championships in Costa Rica.
Terrelonge who had won the 100m on Friday’s opening day of the championships in 11.41 seconds returned yesterday to clock 23.53 to capture gold in the 200m.
There were five wins on the final day for Jamaica as the country ended the three-day meet with 32 medals - 13 gold, 14 silver and five bronze - to be second overall. The United States with 47 medals - 23 gold, 16 silver and eight bronze - topped the medal table with Canada closing out the top three with 28 medals - 12 gold, 19 silver and six bronze.
National senior high jump champion Romaine Beckford picked up the first win yesterday for Jamaica when he won the under-23 high jump after clearing 2.21 metres. Rhianna Phipps also picked up a win in the women’s under-23 triple jump with 13.61 metres.
In other wins on the final day the under-18 and under-23 men mined gold in the 4x400m. In the under-18 event Joshua Wint, Daniel Wright, Jabon Matheson and Trevoy Smith clocked 3:12.50. The under-23 team of Assinie Wilson, Reheem Hayles, Delano Kennedy and Andre Anderson stopped the clock at 3:02.44 for the win.
There were also three second-place finishes for Jamaica yesterday. Ainsley McGregor placed second in the under-18 100 metres in 21.70 seconds and Demar Francis was second in the under-23 200m in 20.67 while the under-23 women were second in the 4x400m in 3:28.50. The members of the team were Garriel Whyte, Shaquane Foote, Joanne Reid and Shauna Kay Anderson.
