It is not often that the losing team comes up with the player-of-the-match award but such was the pressure that Uganda put on Jamaica’s Sunshine Girls at the at the Cape Town International Convention Centre in South Africa earlier today.

The Sunshine Girls remain unbeaten at the Netball World Cup after a 61-49 victory over Uganda, however the fairly comfortable scoreline belied a game of two halves, the second of which was won by the African country.

The efforts of Shadia Nassanga in making that second half a reality, was not lost on viewers and she was duly awarded the player of the match.

The Jamaicans started slowly, running out 16-13, winners in the first quarter, before coming into their own to blow away the Ugandans 23-9 in a second quarter where they couldn’t get close.

It was that cushion that helped the Sunshine Girls stay ahead in the contest though, Uganda would outscore them 16-11 in the third quarter and end the fourth 12-12.

The result means Jamaica lie second in preliminary round two, Group G, behind New Zealand, who earlier beat Wales, 83-43.

Also in Group G of the preliminary round two are South Africa and Trinidad and Tobago

Jamaica will be at rest tomorrow, and face Trinidad and Tobago in their second game of round two on Wednesday.
