Glasgow among goals as Guyana stage comeback against Puerto Rico
MIAMI, United States (CMC):
United States-based teenager Omari Glasgow led a superb Guyana comeback as they rallied from a goal down to brush aside Puerto Rico 3-1 in the Concacaf Nations League on Saturday.
Trailing 1-0 at the St Kitts and Nevis Football Association Technical Centre in Basseterre following Leandro Antonetti’s 11th-minute opener, Guyana hit back with three goals in a vibrant second half, with Glasgow scoring a 60th-minute penalty, Kelsey Benjamin adding a second goal in the 63rd, and England-based Deon Moore notching the third in the 85th.
The win was Guyana’s third on the bounce, keeping them top of Group D in League B with nine points.
Guyana were caught out by a slick move down the left, Darren Ríos sending a searching cross through the box for Antonetti to sweep home after arriving quickly at the far post.
Down 1-0 at the break, Guyana were back on level terms on the hour mark when Gerald Díaz fouled Benjamin in the box, and Glasgow put the resulting spot kick well beyond goalkeeper Joel Serrano’s reach.
Moments later, Liam Gordon produced a determined run into the box, blowing by defender Nicolas Cardona to tee up Benjamin, who tapped in at the near post to put Guyana ahead.
Moore, 24, put the finishing touches on the comeback, pouncing on a howler from Serrano to slot into an empty net.
In the same group, Javorn Stevens hit a double as Antigua and Barbuda whipped the Bahamas 4-1 at the Thomas A. Robinson Stadium in Nassau.
The 25-year-old was on target in the third and ninth minutes, first peeling away from his marker to nod in Joshua Parker’s cross and then racing on to the end of Raheem Deterville’s through-ball to easily beat goalkeeper Phieron Wilson one-on-one.
England-based Thomas-James Bramble netted a third in the 43rd minute as Antigua soared to a 3-0 lead at half-time.
On resumption, Wood Julmis pulled one back for the Bahamas in the 62nd after Marcel Joseph’s long throw-in found him just outside the box. He raced into the area, split the Antiguan defenders before unleashing a superb drive past goalkeeper Zaieem Scott.
Quinton Griffith negated any hopes of a Bahamian comeback, however, scoring in the 77th to give Antigua breathing space.
The win for Antigua was their first, following on from losses in their opening two games.
In League C, Aruba beat US Virgin Islands 3-1 in Oranjestad.
