Brac Rebel tops ‘successful’ Superstars marlin tournament
THE FISHING vessel Brac Rebel won the seventh staging of the Mayberry Investments Superstars of Port Antonio Blue Marlin International Tournament, which ended on Friday at the Errol Flynn Marina in Portland.
Brac Rebel, a Caymanian vessel, was adjudged the winner after amassing 900 points, the same as second-placed Bye Pass. Diana ended third, and Fair Prospect grabbed fourth spot in what has been described as a very successfully tournament.
Tournament Director Robert Stewart, who was the toast of the event, especially during the prize-giving and awards ceremony Friday night, pointed out that the organisers were aiming to attract more boats and anglers next year. According to Stewart, the commendation from all participants was very encouraging.
“This year we attracted the largest number of boats ever, 23 fishing boats, and it was a wonderful tournament, which was enjoyed by all the anglers from Kingston, Montego Bay, Trinidad, Cayman, and Portugal. The weather was beautiful for fishing and the rules of the competition prevailed, and it was quite evident in the tagging and releasing of Blue Marlins,” Stewart said.
Through three days of gruelling competition, which started last Wednesday, a total of 16 marlins were tagged and released, while anglers landed other species of fish including barracuda, dolphin, king fish, and tuna, leaving chairman of Mayberry Investments Ltd to marvel at the tournament's organisation and to commit his organisation's continued support.
By virtue of winning the tournament, Brac Rebel won prize money totalling US$7,000, Bye Pass took home US$4,000, Diana, US$2,000, and Fair Prospect, US$1,000.
Additionally, Brac Rebel also walked away with the following awards, US$3,000 for best captain in the form of Eric River and the top female angler was Samara Persuad.
