Edwin Allen, Jago lead on day one
DEFENDING GIRLS’ champions Edwin Allen and their male counterparts St Jago High are the early leaders at the Central Athletics Championships after the first day of action at GC Foster College yesterday.
Edwin Allen led the girls’ standings with 163 points after 18 of 45 finals, followed by Holmwood with 125 and Hydel with 105. St Jago’s boys lead with 131 points after 19 of 40 finals, with Edwin Allen close behind in second on 129, while Clarendon College sit third with 79.
The standout performance of the day came in the girls’ Class 1 discus, where Edwin Allen’s Shamoyea Morris broke the first record of the meet. She dominated a strong field, throwing 50.34 metres to surpass the previous mark of 49.11. Able Mills of St Catherine High was second with 47.87, while Hydel’s Natassia Burrell finished third with 46.03.
Morris was pleased with her performance.
“I am very happy with the win, especially breaking the record in what was a quality field. I had a good mindset going into the competition, I knew what to do, and I just went out there and executed. I feel really good going into Champs [ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys and Girls’ Athletics Championships],” said Morris.
Edwin Allen were dominant in the 100 metres, winning three of the four finals. Class 4 athlete Andriana Pine led the charge with an impressive 11.87-second clocking. Daniella Clarke secured the Class 3 title for Edwin Allen in 11.99 seconds, ahead of Ferncourt High’s Rhianna Scott (12.02), while Clareke’s teamate Tashana Godfrey was third in 12.07.
Meet record
Ewin Allen’s Kerelle Etienne won the Class 2 100 metres in outstanding fashion, posting 11.56 seconds to break the meet record. St Jago’s Adora Campbell was second in 11.74, while Tina Oliver of Vere Technical took third in 11.78.
Hydel’s Shemoniqe Hazle spoiled Edwin Allen’s sweep, taking the Class I title in a meet record 11.53. Edwin Allen’s Jounee Armstrong finished just behind in 11.56, while her teammate Danielle Lewis was third in 11.59.
St. Catherine High’s Tishani Armstrong won the Class 2 long jump with a leap of 5.34 metres, finishing just ahead of teammate Gabrielle Treasure (5.31). Tiyana Peart of Holmwood was third with 5.26.
Edwin Allen claimed two of the three girls’ 1,500-metre finals. Denique Palmer won Class 3 in 4:50.49 and Kevongaye Fowler secured the Class 2 final in 4:44.06. Cindy Rose of Holmwood captured the Class 1 title in 4:38.92.
St Jago’s Jevaney Findlay stole the show among the boys, clocking an impressive 10.97 seconds to break the meet record in the boys’ Class 3 100 metres. His teammate Jaden Fisher was second in 11.47, just ahead of Charlemont’s Kevar Johnson (11.49).
Edwin Allen’s Taheem Thompson won the boys’ Class 2 100 metres in 10.98 seconds, finishing ahead of teammate Kaleel Archibald 11.02, while Ricardo Mason of Vere Technical took third in 11.15.
In field events, Clinton Baker of Edwin Allen won the boys’ Class 2 shot put with a heave of 16.93 metres. Adrian Daley of St. Catherine High was second with 15.21, while Edwin Allen’s Brian Daley was third.
Today’s final day of competition will get underway at 8:30 a.m. with the finals of the girls’ Open 3000 metres be followed by the boys’ open 5000 metres at 8:50 a.m., the latter featuring the outstanding Ryan Achua of St Jago High.
