Mountain View flare-up leaves one dead

Gunmen travelling in a motor car sprayed residents of a section of Mountain View Avenue with bullets late Monday, killing one man and injuring three others.

The police have identified the dead man as 20-year-old André Mills, also known as 'Wallie'. The identities of the others have not been released.

The owner of the white Subaru motor car used in the shooting was taken into custody by the police shortly after and was questioned by investigators yesterday.

Deputy Superintendent Michael Phipps, who is in charge of crime for the area, said the police want to find out how the gunmen got possession of the car.

Phipps stressed that the investigations were at an early stage, but said the police had established a theory for the shooting.

Shops closed

The area was a virtual ghost town when The Gleaner visited yesterday.

Most of the shops in this tough inner-city community known as 'Back Bush' were closed and not many people were on the street.

One man who spoke to The Gleaner blamed rival gunmen from nearby Jacques Road for the shooting.

"The man dem start shoot from 118 (Mountain View Avenue) and dem nuh stop until dem reach deh so," said the resident, pointing to an area known as 100 Lane.

A report from the Constabulary Communication Network said about 7:30 p.m. Mills was standing at a stall he operated in the area when a vehicle drove up.

The occupants of the car opened fire, hitting him and three other people who were nearby, before speeding away.

The injured persons were taken to hospital where Mills died while being treated and the others admitted in stable condition.

The car was later found abandoned in another section of the community.
