The Commission of Inquiry into the local sugar industry, headed by University of the West Indies Professor Alvin Wint got underway on Tuesday.

The other members of the commission are Wilfred Baghaloo, director of Price WaterhouseCoopers Jamaica and Marjorie Henriques, former director general of the Planning Institute of Jamaica.

Meanwhile, Carol Jones, retired deputy financial secretary at the Ministry of Finance and Planning, is the secretary.

The inquiry, which was first announced in February by Agriculture Minister Dr Chris Tufton has been mandated to overhaul the supervisory rules for the industry and adjust pricing mechanisms.

The Government of Jamaica must complete the review by October in order to benefit from a grant of €17 million.
