PNP seat in danger
SOUTH ST CATHERINE Member of Parliament Sharon Hay-Webster will next week come under intense fire from government MPs as debate on a motion to unseat her is expected to get under way.
North Eastern St Catherine MP Gregory Mair yesterday moved a motion against Hay-Webster asking Parliament to invite her to "renounce immediately her position as a member of the House".
Mair argued that the relinquishing of her seat would be in keeping with the principle of law upheld by the ruling of the court of appeal.
According to Mair, the Supreme Court and the Court of Appeal both ruled in 2008 and 2009, respectively, that West Portland MP Daryl Vaz had contravened Section 40 (2) of the Jamaican Constitution by his own act of renewing his United States visa.
Vaz was ousted from Parliament but reclaimed his seat in a by-election.
Mair contended that Hay-Webster had publicly acknowledged in August 2009 that she was the holder of a US passport.
