Book Review: Quotes from a great political leader
There have been many books written on Nelson Mandela's life over the years and it can often be difficult to determine which are worth the time and money. Well, here's another to add to the list. It's called In the words of Nelson Mandela and it is just that - the words of the great political leader.
Compiled and edited by South African journalist Jennifer Crwys-Williams, the book is a collection of Mandela's words on various matters. The quotes are taken from various sources and made throughout Mandela's life. Everything is covered, from politics and health to marriage and friendships. It is well presented and easy to understand.
So, while this is no biography, by reading In the words of Nelson Mandela, you'll probably learn more about the man than you would ever have imagined. If you're into learning all you can about Mandela, then this book is a great asset.
Here are a few excerpts from the book:
On football: "Soccer is one of the sporting disciplines in which Africa is rising to demonstrate her excellence, far too long latent in her womb."
On the press: "A critical, independent and investigative press is the lifeblood of any democracy."
On freedom: "To be free is not merely to cast off one's chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the lives of others."
On boxing: "My greatest regret in life is that I never became the heavyweight boxing champion of the world."
On youth: "I admire young people who are concerned with the affairs of their community and nation perhaps because I also became involved in struggle while I was still in school."
