Whither sidewalk garage demolition?

THE EDITOR, Sir:
A FEW months ago, the Kingston and St Andrew Corporation embarked on an ambitious and well-needed project to rid the city of sidewalk garages to restore some law and order to the city. However, after a few attempts (which must be commended), it seems as if the steam has fizzled and it appears that this project has been shelved. As a result, what we now have in much of the city of Kingston is a re-emergence of sidewalk garages as well as an increase in the number of other unregulated business. These social ills contribute to crime and lawlessness, decrease the available housing stock, in addition to greatly inconveniencing law-abiding citizens because they do not live in the Golden Triangle of the city.
It seems that some areas of the city are paid more attention with regard to the ever-increasing commercialisation of the city. For years, the residents of McArthur Avenue in St Andrew have been, and continue to be, inconvenienced by this problem. I long for the day when all Jamaicans are treated equally, regardless of education, colour of skin, wealth, political affiliation and/or address. Then again, maybe I am asking too much.
