Eleven-year-old Jenelle Hinds could not contain the stream that made its way down her cheeks yesterday as the recent Enfield Primary and Junior High School graduate recounted her experience in The Gleaner's Children's Own Spelling Bee.
The proud St Mary resident became emotional as she reflected on the 35-year dry spell that marked her parish's perennial failure to advance to the top three at the national finals. It was a moment of glory for her school, parish and the county of Middlesex. She will take her list of accomplishments to St Mary High in September.
Hinds was one of four students honoured at a special dinner and awards presentation for top Spelling Bee and Grade Six Achievement Test (GSAT) performances from each county, as well as the most improved student from the Guy's Hill Primary School in St Catherine.
It was a proud moment for Kemal Johnson's grandmother, Marcia Anderson.
The Guy's Hill Primary School student was described as "not settled" and once teetered on the verge of failure.
Camara Webber received the top marks for Cornwall. The Haddo Primary and Infant School student will be attending Mt Alvernia High in Montego Bay, St James.
Hanif Brown took the top prize for Surrey and represented Airy Castle Primary School in St Thomas. Brown is described by Airy Castle principal Sylvia Stanley as self-motivated.
Brown will definitely be missed when he makes the journey to Morant Bay High in September.
The students each received $35,000, as well as book vouchers from Sangster's Book Stores, the official book sponsors for the competition.
