Press group tackles media accountability

THE PRESS Association of Jamaica (PAJ) will be hosting its 67th anniversary symposium on Wednesday at The Jamaica Pegasus hotel in New Kingston.
In a release yesterday, the PAJ said the theme of the symposium would be 'Accountability and Good Governance in Media' and that the forum would be open to media practitioners, journalism students and members of the public.
Among the topics on which presentations are scheduled are The Role of the Regulator in Ensuring Standards in Media; State Regulation of Media Restricts Freedom of Speech; Self-policing of Media is an Effective Way to Achieve Accountability and Professionalism; and Self-regulation, in a Competitive Media Environment, is Ineffective in Deterring Irresponsible Journalism.
The PAJ said presenters would include Broadcasting Commission Chairman Dr Hopeton Dunn, talk-show host and parliamentarian Ronald Thwaites and veteran journalist Franklin McKnight.
