The Jamaica Manufacturers' Association (JMA) has backed the tough anti-crime measures announced by the security forces yesterday, but bemoaned the collapse of the state of emergency.
"We know that the state of emergency could not have been a long-term crime-fighting tool, and if it was extended, we would want to see clear plans and strategies which sustainably address crime and violence," said the JMA.
"However, in light of the developments, we are pleased that stringent measures to tackle crime are being fast-tracked."
Meanwhile, the President's Council of the Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica yesterday rebuked parliamentarians for not working together to extend the state of emergency, which expired at midnight.
"Partisan politics and its corollary of disunity on vital national issues must not undermine their sacrifices, and the sacrifices of the country as a whole.
"We, therefore, call upon both political parties to immediately sit down together, in the national interest, to resolve those differences ... and to emerge with a common accord."
