Insulting to Ho Lung, Miller

Published:Friday | July 23, 2010 | 12:00 AM

The Editor, Sir:

With all due respect, Martha Adams is misguided in the particular way she refers to Fr Richard Ho Lung in her letter to you of July 15.

We are all human and prone to error (and of course criticism, and correction), whether it be pope, pastor or politician. However, to use the words "narrow theological prejudice" in a context relating to either Father Ho Lung or Al Miller is not only inaccurate and inappropriate but grossly out of order and insulting.

Apart from anything else, to refer to any of these individuals in such a way implies an ignorance and/or dismissal of the contribution they are both making to the island.

Gratitude missing

In the case of Fr Ho Lung, the country should be eternally grateful for the services he and his organisation are providing for the down-and-out in the country, the most humble and at the same time valuable of services that can be provided for mankind in general. As said before, anyone is prone to error, but if there is disagreement with him, certainly, more respect is due than has been shown.

Regarding the actions of Al Miller in the recent Dudus drama, it can be seen without too much difficulty that his particular type of involvement resulted in the expeditious, effective, and damage-free winding up of the whole extradition affair, something all Jamaica, including the Jamaica Constabulary Force, should be glad for.

On the subject of police, Commissioner Ellington and his team must be congratulated for their effective tackling of the crime scene. Although there are alleged abuses, none of which, if actually occurring, can ever be justified, there is a real sense that criminality is being addressed in a way that has been missing in the country for the last 40 or so years.

I am, etc.,
