Disdain for the people
THE EDITOR, Sir:
I GUESS I will forever be in amazement at the way the Jamaican people treat their future, the reckless disregard with which they allow others - mostly with divergent and dangerous views - to determine the future of our country.
By now, we are aware that the People's National Party (PNP), and the Jamaica Labour Party are more interested in maintaining the status quo, for their own political ends. The most recent disgraceful charade in Parliament by both groups shows the utter disdain that they have for the intelligence and well being of the people.
There are some in the media who also are quite willing to circumvent free speech in order to enhance their own agenda. We must realise that it is the diversity of thought that will ultimately make our country greater and not unanimity or concurrence on any question; even dissent have a place in nation building.
Stop forcing ideas down our throats
I call on the legal fraternity, and particularly those who claim to represent civil rights, to desist from forcing ideas down our throats; we are quite capable of making our own decisions. The general view is that your interest is coddling criminals; we are against you coddling criminals and dictating to us what is good for us. While you are entitled to your contrarian views, this is our country and we believe our national security will not and should not be determined by those who choose to protect killers over innocent victims of terror.
The opposition got outmaneuvered because they were predictably going to acquiesce to the criminal rights fundamentalists. Golding knew this and played them like a fiddle.
The PNP still believe that populism and pleasing everyone is compatible with good governance; however, governing is making tough decisions that may be unpopular but in the long run is the right medicine for sustained wellbeing.
I am, etc.,
Mike Beckles
