Appeal for day-care centre

Published:Saturday | July 31, 2010 | 12:00 AM

The Editor, Sir:

I am writing in reference to the Rita Coore Day Care Centre which is located on Chalmers Avenue off Molynes Road. This institution was constructed in the 1970s on a piece of land which was then part of the Jamintel property - this property now belongs to LIME.

The day-care centre operated until earlier this year when it began to scale back operations to only a few days per week, until it closed completely two to three months ago. Understandably, since the closure, the property has become overgrown and is in desperate need of bushing.

As my house shares a common fence with this property I have made a number of attempts to find out who is responsible for the centre. But despite calls to the Child Development Agency, the Early Childhood Commission and the Ministry of Education to find out under which agency the property falls, I am still in the dark as no one claims responsibility.

Breeding mosquitoes

I have been told that initially the property was managed by a committee which ceased to function after a while, and then it was being operated by an individual. It has even been suggested that I should speak with LIME or with the KSAC with regard to having the place cleaned.

The property, in this state, presents as a breeding ground for mosquitoes (dengue is now on the rise), a security risk, as soon we won't be able to see through the bushes, and may even be vandalised without anyone noticing.

I am, through this medium, making an appeal to the powers that be to have a look at this property and make whatever arrangements are necessary to have the property not only bushed, but also put back into operation. With the Government's emphasis and current thrust on early-childhood education, here is an ideal and ready-made opportunity to make good on the promise of a sound early education for our children.

I am, etc.,
