Cooper among the theologians?

Published:Saturday | August 7, 2010 | 12:00 AM

The Editor, Sir:

Sometimes a letter to the editor reveals more of the writer than the subject written about. On occasions, this is deliberate and sometimes it is not. In the instant case, one Dave McFarlane reveals his religious bigotry and intellectual immaturity quite inadvertently when he tries to criticise Dr Carolyn Cooper.

Dr Cooper quite rightly tries to put our God-culture in proper perspective, as we all try to come to terms with the concept of the all-powerful, all-knowing, all-doing God. You will realise that Mr McFarlane begins the letter with "I", and so it continues, as it is all about the "I", and very little else.

Disturbing concerns

Well, Mr McFarlane, I too have very deep disturbing concerns about this invisible God who speaks only to choice "trained theologians" like you, on whose behalf unbelievable carnage has been perpetrated worldwide over the centuries; a god whose church has carried out some of the most horrible sexual abuse on minors ever imagined. You need to begin to think on what is it that you so unquestioningly believe.

Forget the child-like abuse of Dr Cooper, I believe that the "spiritually minded", whatever that is, like you, need to get your cloudy brains back down to earth and suggest some real-time solutions to the problems we face.

I am, etc.,
