Thumbs up to Grand Gala team
The Editor, Sir:
This year's Grand Gala, I believe, was a success. Integrating the various ethnic groups was an excellent move showing much insight on the part of Culture Minister Olivia Grange, Grace Silvera of the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission and their hard-working teams.
My hope is that the Government will consider this event in the annual budget. With an annual budget allocation, it would mean less stress in advance coordinating of the activities and participants would know beforehand the anticipated magnitude of the event. Long-term planning seems not to exist here in Jamaica, which lends itself to responsible personnel being exposed to extreme pressure during preparation stages of such events.
If corporate Jamaica chooses to donate funds closer to the time, the savings from that budget could be used to fund intervention programmes in the communities from which performers hail.
This event is a part of our rich cultural heritage that needs to be kept alive. The Grand Gala is an amalgamation of all the cultural and heritage week activities that take place in schools. Our culture is once again revitalised and our children were also inspired by the events and this was expressed in their group activities.
