People's National Party (PNP) wants Wong to apologise

The Opposition People's National Party (PNP) yesterday said the Chief Executive Officer of the National Works Agency (NWA), Patrick Wong, should apologise for the way he responded to a Gleaner query this week.

Wong told The Gleaner on Wednesday that it was nonsense to question the rationale for the parish-by-parish launch of an islandwide road programme, and rebuffed Gleaner queries about who was providing the funds for the launches.

"That is really none of your business ... . Why do you want to know who is paying for it?" Wong snapped.

regrettable outburst

Robert Pickersgill, the opposi-tion spokesman on works, said, "Wong should apologise for his regrettable outburst post-haste."

"We continue to record our protest against the habit of this administration to respond to questions regarding the use of public resources with personal attacks and utter disrespect against the persons asking the questions, as well as their tardiness in responding to questions asked," he added.

The Opposition said Wong must be made to understand that the NWA is dealing with public funds, and in particular in this case, which forms part of a loan that must be repaid by the Jamaican taxpayers.
