Shahine relents: Election petition fight ends

MEMBER OF Parliament (MP) for North East St Ann, Shahine Robinson, yesterday filed in the Supreme Court Registry the notice of her intention not to contest the election petition filed against her.
Elector Manley Bowen had filed the petition days after the September 3, 2007, general election claiming that Robinson was an American citizen and so was not entitled to sit in Parliament.
Robinson was asked last week by Bowen's lawyers, Abe Dabdoub and Raymond Clough, to respond to an alien registration card and a naturalisation certificate which they had filed in the Supreme Court.
When Robinson turned up on Thursday for pre-trial review, her lawyers announced that she was not contesting the election petition.
Justice Roy Jones ordered that Robinson file the notice of intention yesterday. The parties were asked to return to the Supreme Court next week Wednesday when it is expected that the judge will notify the Speaker of the House of Representatives that she has been disqualified from sitting as an MP.
