We are in trouble

The Editor, Sir:

Jamaica has become consumed by scandal, corruption and murder. Every day the media are burdened with the task of reporting unfortunate news. The Government and the Opposition are too caught up with election campaigning and 'scandal watch' to deal with the development of the country. Politics has, for too long, controlled the advancement of the people in a country where about 85 per cent of the population is unemployed and underemployed.

We spend tremendous amounts of money on inquiries and are overly concerned about issues that have no effect on nation building. The People's National Party is fixated on the Manatt, Phelps & Phillips issue and opts to base their whole election campaign on it The Jamaica Labour Party has decided to clean house and its modus operandi is membership fees. If these are the two tentative issues in these parties, we are in trouble.

A privilege

The leadership of the JLP needs to remember this party was formed and founded by Alexander Bustamante in 1943. Party leadership is a privilege, given by its members, who should not be forced out because of a dispute with the leader.

The People's National Party has, for the last three years experienced 'divine intervention'. It is now promising the people better and more responsible representation. What about the eighteen and a half years of greed and mismanage-ment? Many of the persons giving these commitments were there from the start and would be considered career politicians, so why is it that now when their party is no longer in power they can identify the problems in the country and have all the solutions on how to fix it?

What new ideas do the PNP have to bring to the table that could not have been executed during their long tenure? The facade that is currently being portrayed by the PNP is just a ploy to regain power and it will be business as usual.

I am, etc.,
