Promote healthy lifestyle
The Editor, Sir:
Two articles on obesity were recently published in The Gleaner. Diabetes and high blood pressure are associated with being overweight, and many in our society have one or both of these conditions.
Diabetics require a low intake of sugar, and a high intake of salt contributes greatly to high blood pressure.
Time is long overdue, therefore, for our leading food processors and soft-drink companies to play a greater role in the processing of their products to suit these diseases.
There are many bottled and canned drinks on the market but very few are labelled "diet". The same applies to low or salt-free products.
As an example, I have found only one company with low-salt canned corned beef.
Our food and soft-drink processors need to do more to promote healthy living by using less sugar and salt.
I am, etc.,
