Fresh faces needed in politics
THE EDITOR, Sir:
I NOTE G2K's call for a renewal of Jamaica's political system. There is no doubt that this is an urgent necessity and must be put in train now. After seeing Robert Pickersgill (in his late 60s) re-elected for the 19th time as chairman of the People's National Party (PNP) and the 'leadership union' of Portia Simpson-Miller and Peter Phillips, one has to wonder if this country is devoid of young and fresh talent. Where are the young people?
Where are the Ed Milibands? And where are the Obamas? It cannot be the case that Jamaica's senior leaders, many in their 60s and others in their 70s, should have a stranglehold on political leadership.
The Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) is simply no better. I am peeved to see so many ministers of government approaching and past the retirement age harping away on TV nightly. G2K is perfectly right in their call and must not be dissuaded. The JLP, PNP and the Jamaican society - here and overseas - have more than enough talent that can serve politically. The performances of the younger government ministers vis-à-vis the older ones is testament to the need for renewal.
I am, etc.,
Brianna Scarlett
