A DATE for the opening of the Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) bus park in downtown Kingston remains a mystery, more than a year after it was scheduled to open.

Urban Development Corporation (UDC) Chairman Wayne Chen told The Gleaner yesterday that he was not aware of any obstacles preventing the opening of the facility.

He indicated that the UDC, which had oversight responsibility for the construction of the park, had completed its job. Chen said it was just the formality of an official handover ceremony that was pending.

The UDC chairman said the park could be opened in a "matter of weeks".

Announcement soon

A JUTC source, who was reluctant to provide an explanation for the continued delay in the opening of the bus park, indicated that an announcement would be made soon.

The park, located at Water Lane, was estimated to be completed at a cost of $161 million.

On weekdays, an estimated 50,000 commuters will use the bus park, which will replace the drive-through park in Parade, downtown Kingston.
