PORTMORE, St Catherine: Work on the Naggo Head Transportation Centre in Portmore, St Catherine, which began over two weeks ago is expected to be completed by the end of October.
Speaking during the official ground-breaking ceremony on Thursday, Chris Dehring, chairman, LIME Jamaica, said the telecommunications company was committed to giving back to a community where many of its employees reside.
"After 140 years of being in Jamaica, a Jamaican chairman, a Jamaican managing director, 1,200 Jamaicans that work for LIME - we have more than 700 people who work at LIME and live here in Portmore - this is a company that is really at home," Dehring said.
He, however, did not put a dollar value to the rehabilitation project.
In endorsing the project, Fitz Jackson, member of parliament for South St Catherine, told The Gleaner that he was pleased with LIME's investment.
"This place was paved under the whole Portmore Development Programme in the mid '90s. We spent over $500 million and used SESP (Social and Economic Support Programme) funds to establish the park for it to be handed over to the municipality to do further development and operation of it. It has never happened because we were never able to get the budgetary allocation to make it a reality," said Jackson.
a fitting location
In the meantime, an elated Mayor Keith Hinds implored the users of the centre to exercise care and protect the facility.
Citing that Naggo Head was one of the oldest communities in Portmore, Councillor Dr Andrew Wheatley indicated that it was only fitting that the first transportation centre was established in the community.
Work on the park includes the installation and repair of lights, construction of bus shelters, sanitary facilities and a guard house and entry barriers.
The erection of water tanks, the setting up of a garbage disposal area and the repair of the surface and the drainage system will also form part of the rehabilitation work at the transportation facility.
