Consider JPs' volunteerism
The Editor, Sir:
I think the time has come for more concern be shown to a vital segment of our judicial system in Jamaica. I refer to our justices of the peace.
The English tradition handed down to us is that this commission to carry out the process necessary to our development as a nation is a totally voluntary and honourable one. These justices are called on to sit in petty session courts, which are held sometimes far distances from their places of abode, spending sometimes a whole day in the duty of the courts. No compensation is offered as this office is supposedly the true essence of volunteerism.
I am calling on the relevant minister and authorities to offer these justices of the peace, at least, duty concession on motor vehicles, which must be maintained for a minimum of five years before replacement.
This would be a token gesture of appreciation for the invaluable and great work of these noble and patriotic Jamaicans.
I am, etc.,
VICTOR A CHANCE, JP
