St Thomas Health Department embarks on massive clean-up drive

MORANT BAY, St. Thomas: The St Thomas Health Department (STHD) is to embark on a massive clean-up drive in November in an effort to reduce the volume of solid waste in the parish.

The STHD is also moving to reduce the number of rodents in the parish. The national clean-up week is earmarked for the first week in November.

Speaking during a meeting at the health department last week, Earl Warren, the solid-waste management project manager, said on November 2, there will be a clean-up in Morant Bay, followed by another exercise in the Norris and Yallahs area, and the community of Lyssons on the 3rd and the 4th, respectively.

Warren appealed to the business leaders and stakeholders who had previously pledged their support and commitment to the project to be faithful to their commitment as the health department need their support to make the project successful.

The health department launched a three-year programme in June, and has been visiting schools, churches and community groups to educate the public on solid-waste management.

Pauline Ellington, chief public health inspector for the parish, told The Gleaner that there was a direct relationship between the improper management of solid waste and the number of rodents that wreak havoc in the parish.
