Denham Town homeowners move to regularise power

THE JAMAICA Public Service Company Ltd (JPS) yesterday revealed that more than a third of households in Denham Town had taken the first step to have their electricity supply regularised.

In a release, the JPS said 2,304 households had signed up for assistance to have their houses properly wired so that they can be certified to receive safe power supply.

Of the remaining households, more than 500 are legal customers. There are approximately 3,000 households in Denham Town.

"This move from the community comes as a response to JPS's continued campaign to eliminate illegal connections in sections of the downtown community," the light and power company stated.

"JPS has been working in collaboration with the Rural Electrification Programme, which operates under the Ministry of Energy and Mining, in addition to hiring personnel as community facilitators. These facilitators have been going to households individually to encourage residents to sign up for legal service."

The JPS said that having completed its installation of the residential automated metering infrastructure system in the Denham Town community, it has begun to transfer legal customers to the system. Transfer of all customers is expected to be completed by mid-November.

The light and power company said it was spending approximately $1.2 billion this year to address the problem of electricity theft across the island.
