Jamaican credit union executive Ertis Blake will be honoured in December by his international peers, who have chosen him Director of the Year.

It is the first time that an executive outside the United States has been selected for such recognition by the Credit Union Executives Society (CUES), the group said in a statement.

Blake is president of the Communications & Other Workers of Jamaica Cooperative Credit Union Limited (C&WJCCU).

He has been on the C&WJCCU board since 1983, during which time it shifted from an employee-based to community-based lender.

"Additionally, it was the first credit union to implement telephone banking and one of the first credit unions to introduce Internet banking in Jamaica," said CUES.

C&WJCCU membership has doubled under Blake's watch to 17,889.

He will be honoured by CUES at its December 5-8 conference in Phoenix, Arizona.

The CUES Director of the Year award recognises board members for excellence in credit union volunteerism, the organisation said.
