Two men who pleaded guilty to the murder of Marvin Brown while he was on duty as a security guard at the Portland Credit Union in July 2009 have been sentenced to life imprisonment.

Supreme Court Judge Sarah Thompson-James, in passing sentence yesterday, ordered that they must serve 30 years before parole.

The men are 21-year-old labourer Troy Jarrett of 1 West Road, Kingston 2, and 20-year-old labourer Germaine Mitchell of 25 Mountain View Avenue, Kingston 2.

The facts of the case as outlined by Vaughn Smith, assistant director of public prosecutions, were that on July 13, 2009, the men went to the Portland Credit Union and robbed the security guard of his firearm. They shot him dead and then escaped in a waiting motor car.

The police were alerted and shortly after spotted the getaway motor car.

A shoot-out ensued and one of the men in the car was fatally shot; Jarrett and Mitchell were shot and wounded. They were taken to hospital and when they were released, an identification parade was held.

Witnesses pointed them out as the men who had shot and robbed the security guard. Jarrett and Mitchell pleaded guilty in the Portland Circuit Court, but sentencing took place in the Home Circuit Court.
