OPPOSITION LEADER Portia Simpson Miller said the role of the journalist in protecting and enhancing democracy throughout a society is unquestionable.

In her message to mark Journalism Week, which is being observed November 28 to December 4 under the theme, 'Preserving Democracy: The Journey Continues', Simpson Miller said it was the role of journalists to consider the national situation and review the activities of state and non-state actors.

She also noted that the role of the journalist was to "analyse the impact of those activities on the greater good of the community; and to determine if national objectives are being achieved, if progress is being advanced and to comment unstintingly".

She added: "In truth, we have always benefited from the advocacy of journalists and from the rich tradition of journalism in Jamaica. The multiplicity of media outlets and formats attests to this fact. At various points in our country's journey it has been our journalists that have challenged the status quo while awakening the citizenry to be even more discerning than otherwise we might have been."

The opposition leader said the work of the Press Association of Jamaica for past 67 years has added tremendous value to Jamaica's development.

"On behalf of a grateful nation I thank you for your partnership in nation building and look forward always to that partnership in preserving our democracy as we continue this national journey."
