A Trench Town wish list

Quaheem Powell:

He's just about your typical two-year-old. He loves sweets, is attached to family members and is eagerly looking forward to Christmas.

"I want a bike," said Quaheem Powell with a big smile. He was standing outside a small shop in Trench Town, St Andrew, yesterday.

Quaheem's mother died when he was only two months old. He is being raised by his aunt, Monique Williams, and his grandmother.

"He loves bikes and cars," said Williams. "Anytime he sees a toy bike or car, his face just lights up bright.

"The whole community take care of Quaheem. Everybody around here takes care of him since his mother died," she said.

Quaheem's mother, who was only 19 when she died, was well known and loved in Trench Town. Her funeral was described as one of the biggest the community has ever seen. Now, her friends have come together to give her only son the best they can.

"We don't have much, but what we have, we put together for Quaheem. Everybody loved her, so now everybody love Quaheem," said Williams.

"We might not be able to give Quaheem what him want for Christmas, but we will try to make it as merry as possible."

Kimona Powell:

She loves to talk and is by no means shy. Kimona Powell is a happy three-year-old who can't wait for Christmas Day.

"Every day she ask about Christmas. That's all she want to talk about," said Kimona's mom, Carvia Sewell.

Kimona has already decided what she wants for Christmas.

"I want a dolly!" she shouted. Her mother laughed.

"That's how she stay. She not afraid to say what she want."

The little girl walked a few feet away to play. Sewell spoke in a whisper. "I don't know what going to happen with Christmas yet. Mi know what she want, but sometimes things not so easy. If I did have it, it would be easy, but I going to have to see what happen first," said Sewell.

"Anyway, you take it still, she going to be happy. Kimona going to be happy. Everybody around here love her, so she going to be happy when Christmas come, no matter how you take it."
