Bullish close to market trading in 2010

Last Friday, the final day of trading on the stock market for 2010, the bulls were running, with 10 of 18 stocks on the big board that traded making gains on the previous day.

The main market index closed at 85,221, up 549 points or 0.65 per cent on the day and 1,899 points or 2.23 per cent for the year.

In yearlong trading, 29 stocks closed out 2010 at higher prices, 16 lost value, and one, JMMB, closed at its J$4 opening price.

The junior index closed at 380 points on gains by four of the six stocks traded in that tier of the market.

The junior market gained 14 points or 3.8 per cent on the day, and 230 points or 60.5 per cent on the year, though it had only one stock listed then - junior pioneer Access Financial - compared to eight now.

The JSE market now holds J$564.7 billion of wealth; the JSE junior market, J$8.5 billion.
