School lab named for DB&G founders
A new science laboratory named for the founders of the investment bank Dehring Bunting and Golding (DB&G) was commissioned at Campion College last Wednesday by the high school's alumni and the three men that the facility honours.
The DB&G Integrated Science Lab cost $4.7 million to renovate and outfit with equipment for 700 students in first to third form. Its total student population is 1,450.
Campion is one of the top high schools in Jamaica known for churning out high achievers. Peter Bunting, Christopher Dehring, and Senator Mark Golding, pioneers in investment banking in Jamaica and founders of DB&G, are among its alumni.
The men are no longer owners of the company. DB&G is now Scotia DBG Investments, named for the banking group that acquired it in 2006.
Campion principal, Grace Baston, said the men contributed US$45,000 (J$3.8million) to the science lab project, according to a press release on the commissioning and naming of the facility.
"Not only is it a vast improvement on the original lab which, like the others in our Science Wing, had not been renovated in 50 years, but it has also provided a model for the future of the school's learning spaces," Baston said.
Other donors included the Burgess family, the GraceKennedy Foundation, Dr Jeffrey Meeks, Ex-o-Pest Limited, Peter Reid, Dr Michelle Foote, Gregory Worton, and Denise and Neville Lyn-Fatt.
Bunting, who is now a member of parliament, said Campion provided him with an excellent education and that he developed lifelong friendships while on its campus, including Dehring and Golding.
Bunting and Dehring graduated from Campion in 1977. Golding was enrolled from 1976 and 1979, but completed his studies overseas. The three were inducted to the Campion College Alumni Association Hall of Fame in 2009.
Golding and Bunting are once again investment partners, along with Garfield 'Garry' Sinclair and Chris Williams, in a new venture, Proven Management Limited, which started in February 2010.
Sinclair and Dehring are now telecoms executives with LIME.
