WESTERN BUREAU:
Bishop Herman Johnson, head of the Good News Church of God based in Adelphi, St James, and president of the Montego Co-operative Credit Union, is dead.
Johnson died yesterday while undergoing treatment at the Falmouth Hospital in Trelawny for injuries he reportedly sustained in a fall from a tree at his Greenwood, St James, home.
He would have celebrated his 70th birthday today.
General manager of the Montego Credit Union, Everton Spencer, remembered Johnson as a visionary.
"He was a wonderful person, someone who was always dedicated to the principles, ideals and philosophy of the credit-union movement. Bishop Johnson was someone who everybody, at all levels, could turn to for advice and guidance and he has surely left a void in our lives," said Spencer.
"We sincerely miss him, but at Montego we are going to ensure that the legacy that he has left and the mark that he has made on this credit union will continue in the future."
A long-standing member of the Montego Credit Union, Johnson was elected president of the board of directors in 2008 and served in that position until his death.
He and his wife, Lelieth, founded the Greenwood Preparatory School and the Good News Church of God, which is headquartered in Adelphi.
A justice of the peace for St James, Johnson is survived by his wife, daughter Lavonne Johnson-Earle and a granddaughter.
Board director Lorna Rampasard remembered Johnson as a practical person who spoke his mind.
"Bishop Johnson was approachable, always willing to help people and led from the front where the credit union was concerned," she said.
