SHRINKING JOB opportunities are dictating that Jamaicans would be better served by preparing themselves to go into business, with the aim of creating job opportunities for others. That's the view of CEO of the COK Sodality Co-operative Credit Union, Jacqueline Mighty.

Delivering the keynote address at a recent graduation for participants in the Jamaica 4-H Clubs Tractor Operation and Maintenance and Food Preparation course, Mighty told her audience that the shifting economic tide is likely to find unprepared or underprepared persons in a vulnerable position.

She cited a recent situation where a communications firm placed an advertisement in a national newspaper inviting applications by email for someone who could function as an administrative assistant/receptionist. By the end of the day, over 40 applications had been received, and by the January 18 deadline, the number had grown to 578.
