It was already known, says Phipps

A DAY after he was described as being callous by the People's National Party (PNP), Frank Phipps has hit back, claiming he did not say anything about the wife of former commissioner of police Rear Admiral Hardley Lewin that was not already in the public domain.

Phipps, during cross-examination of Lewin on Monday, suggested to the former police commissioner that his wife tipped him off about the pending request for Coke.

Phipps also exposed to the commission of enquiry that Lewin's wife was a captain in the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF), which Lewin headed, and that she now works in an intelligence unit at the United States Embassy in Kingston.

"I think it is written into the record that the issue involving the wife of the then commissioner of police was a matter that was exposed in the embassy of the United States website and, therefore, it is a matter of public knowledge," Phipps said.

He has described the PNP's position as "intemperate".

The PNP had stated Monday that it was of the view that Phipps' comments had the potential of exposing Lewin's wife to grave danger, "given the sensitive nature of her employment".
