How the journey began

'Whatsoever I do, if it is not gonna serve the people, I'm not doing it'

Ralph Avery's journey started about 1966 when he accepted a job as a distributor with Antilles, which had a lock on the fertiliser market. Three years later when Antilles sold out to Aruba Chemicals, young Avery declined the offer to transfer to the new company. Having established a wide network and customer base across the island, he opted to start his own business.

While he admits that leaving for the United States was the right thing to do for his family, Avery is convinced that had he not gone abroad, his organic fertiliser company would today be dominating the market. Still, he has no regrets, pointing out that he is responding to a higher calling.

"I just believe very strongly a man must love God and his country. That's my firm belief, and I dedicate my life to those ideals," remarked Avery. "Whats-oever I do, if it is not gonna serve the people, I'm not doing it. No self-gain is important to me. I like to live a very humble life. I think the whole purpose of man is to serve God."

From depots strategically located across the island, Avery's Organic Fertiliser Company is striving to serve Jamaica, employing a large number of workers at the Clarendon factory and from its Kingston office at 6 Seabreeze Avenue.
