Driven by her work

THE DRIVER shouts, "Little girl, come out di road! What yuh tink, yuh a iron?" Then in the blink of an eye, the car reverses, spins with horns blaring, and then another shout escapes from it, "May Pen, lady! Yuh coming?"

Sitting behind the steering wheel of the silver Toyota Corolla station wagon is a petite woman who seems to be swallowed up by the car's interior. She is one of the few female taxi drivers who transport passengers from various communities in the parish to the town of May Pen.

Beverly Gordon, known to her colleagues and passengers simply as Joy, runs the May Pen to Lionel Town route from Mondays to Saturdays and sometimes on Sundays. She is from the community of Gayle in Lionel Town, where she has lived for several years.
