THE BROADCASTING Commission has warned Jamaicans not to engage the services of illegal cable operators as this could land them in jail.

Professor Hopeton Dunn, chairman of the commission, said the regulatory body had been informed that criminal gangs and unscrupulous persons are tampering with the cable boxes of licensed providers

He said these illicit operators were offering illegal cable services to citizens in certain parts of the country.

Dunn's comments came at the commission's stakeholders' meeting held in Kingston yesterday.

Members of the public were warned that any person who provided or used an illegal cable box or unlicensed services is liable to arrest and if convicted, subject to a fine of up to $500,000 and a possible prison term.
