A children's rally, an exhibition of Jamaican foods, and a luncheon honouring past principals were the main activities staged by the Stella Maris Prep School in Kingston yesterday to commemorate Jamaica Day 2011.

From early yesterday, there was a buzz of excitement at the institution.

Enthusiastic children packed the school's auditorium clad in the national black, green, and gold colours and the traditional red and white plaid folk costume as they awaited the official start of Jamaica Day celebrations.

Led by teachers, the children sang popular Jamaica folk and gospel songs.

The main feature of the day was a puppet show.

"What day is it? Is it Australia Day?" asked the shaggy-haired puppet peering over the black screen.

"No. Jamaica Day!" shrieked several children, obviously aware of the day's significance as well as thrilled by the puppets' on-stage antics.

The school's 2011 festival dance troupe also performed several folk dances, which were well received.

Jamaica Day was observed under the theme 'Celebrating Jamaica: Feasting on our Heritage'.
