Ban on used-tyre importation still in effect - commerce minister

Commerce Minister Karl Samuda has declared that the existing ban on the importation of used tyres into the island remains in effect.

In a statement Tuesday, Samuda said that although permission was given to clear used tyres which were on the wharf or in transit before January 12, no further used tyres are being allowed entry into Jamaica.

The minister said the Bureau of Standards, in consultation with a range of stakeholders, was developing a standard for used tyres which would take into account all safety concerns; and a licensing framework was being prepared. He said although it was anticipated that this process would have been completed by March 1, it is still under way.

Samuda said any decision regarding the removal of the existing ban on used tyres would only be made after completion of the standard and the development of a licensing framework. He stated that while he was aware of the used-tyre industry's concerns, the safety of the public was paramount.
