Lovers of Jamaica
When you love your country, one of your most rewarding feelings comes from making a meaningful contribution to its development. And that's the way it was for the Jamaican Committee of the annual Pineapple Ball on Wednesday, when they honoured their slogan, 'Enjoy Making Good Things Happen'.
The proceeds from the ball, held last year at the Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden in Miami, were handed over to several local charities at the Spanish Court Hotel in St Andrew. From its inception 11 years ago, when they assisted Peace and Love in Society (PALS), to the present (helping 13 local charities catering to the less fortunate), Pineapple Ball continues to give back. In addition to the numerous scholarships that they have established at the University of the West Indies, this year one will be funded in the name of Dr Guy Harvey, renowned marine scientist and marine artist.
Among the recipients this year are: The University of the West Indies, The Jamaica Epilepsy Association, Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts, Wise Women's Club of Montego Bay, Maxfield Park Children's Home, the Human Employment and Resource Training (HEART) Academy, PALS, Animal House, Hampton School, SOS Children's Village, Northgate C-Tec, Westwood High School and Tivoli Project.
All the recipients were grateful for the contribution that will definitely help in their various programmes that assist the needy.
