Trial of accused murderers to continue next week
TWO MEN facing murder charges in separate incidents are to return to the Home Circuit Court on April 29.
They are Michael McLean, 39, who is charged with the murder of six members of a family in St Thomas in February 2006, and Rohan Masters, who is charged with the murder of 48-year-old gas station operator Sylvia Edwards.
A bail application will be made for McLean when he returns to court and outstanding statements will be served on his lawyer. McLean has been in custody since 2006. It is expected that a trial date will be set when he returns to court.
The Crown is alleging that the six deceased, who were relatives of McLean's girlfriend, were murdered between February 25 and 26, 2006. Some of the deceased were chopped to death and, in some cases, their throats were slashed.
McLean is charged with the murder of Patrice George-McCool, 28; Sean Chin Jr, nine; Lloyd Marshall George McCool, three; Jihad George McCool, seven; Jesse O'Gilvie, nine; and Terry-Ann Mohammed, 40, all of Duhaney Pen, St Thomas.
Masters, 27, is facing a retrial for Edwards' murder. He was charged jointly with 51-year-old Rupert Wallace, but Wallace who was on bail was killed last year in an alleged shoot-out with the police. They were convicted of the murder, but in 2005 the Court of Appeal quashed the verdicts and ordered a retrial.
Edwards was kidnapped along Red Hills Road in July 2000. A demand was made for a ransom of $200,000, but when it was not met she was shot dead. The body was found in a shallow grave in Constitution Hill, St Andrew, on August 1, 2000.
