Continuing to make good on its promise to keep giving back to the community, LIME has partnered with leading global publishers MacMillan to donate books to local primary schools on 'Read Across Jamaica Day', which will be observed on Tuesday, May 3.
MacMillan will be providing copies of their new 'Reggae Readers' series for the over 100 LIME executives and employee volunteers who will be reading at schools across the island.
The 'Reggae Readers' series, which was written to appeal to young Jamaicans at the primary-school level, includes stories and non-fiction pieces which aim to foster a love for reading among children while reinforcing sound moral values. Each book in the three-part series is accompanied by a CD which brings the text to life with music and song.
national initiative
LIME's employees will join this national initiative which is being spearheaded by the Jamaica Teachers' Association and forms a part of the annual celebrations to mark Child Month.
LIME executives and employees are all geared up to inspire excellence in students by reading and interacting with them. The LIME team will also be donating the books to all the schools they visit, along with other gifts.
According to Grace Silvera, regional vice-president, marketing and communications at LIME, "Education is critical to the social and economic development of our country and LIME has had a long-standing record in contributing to both education and the community. The spirit of volunteerism among the LIME team is extremely high and we're eager to be in the classrooms on Tuesday."
Minister of Education Andrew Holness had high praise for both LIME and MacMillan for supporting Read Across Jamaica and channelling resources towards the promotion of literacy. "The promotion of reading and the improvement of literacy rates are important goals for the Ministry of Education, and we are pleased that LIME and MacMillan are aligned and are supporting us in achieving these objectives," he said.
The book donation is the first initiative that LIME will be undertaking in collaboration with MacMillan. Both companies are currently in talks about developing a regional partnership to support education across the Caribbean.
