Jamaica Customs to tackle underinvoicing

Jamaica Customs Department yesterday said it would be adopting a zero-tolerance approach to underinvoicing of motor vehicles.

In a media release, Customs said: "In light of the significant reduction in duty rates on motor vehicles and motorcycles by the Government, the Jamaica Customs Department will be treating any act of underinvoicing in the harshest possible manner allowed by law."

Among the possible penalties that could result from underinvoicing is that the importer may be forced to forfeit the vehicle. He may also be charged three times the value of the vehicle.
