Maritime student population increase geared to deliver jobs
THE GOVERNMENT is boasting a 1,000-student enrolment at the Jamaica Maritime Institute, an increase of 800 students.
Transport and Works Minister Mike Henry reported yesterday that there were plans to further increase the student population to 3,000.
In his 2011-2012 Budget presentation, Henry said more students were being trained at the institute to take up high-end job opportunities within the maritime sector globally.
He said over the years, qualified graduates from the institution have secured lucrative positions in the maritime sector.
"That again speaks to the fulfilment of the jobs, jobs, jobs commitment which, in this case, is being generated through purposeful provision of educational opportunities geared at tapping into the global workforce," Henry said.
